What does your name mean?
We focus on prolonging healthspan and enhancing longevity through preventive and lifestyle medicine – hence the name of the practice, “The Prolongevity Clinic.” healthspan refers to the years lived in good health, enjoying all that life has to offer with vigor and vitality, as opposed to lifespan which simply refers to the number of years alive (many Americans spend the last years of their lives in very poor health).
What is preventive care?
Preventive care focuses on maintaining health and preventing diseases before they occur through regular check-ups and screenings.
How does the telehealth format work?
Our telehealth services allow you to see your doctor remotely, ensuring convenience and accessibility. When it is time for your visit, you simply sign in to the secure, HIPAA-compliant video visit from your phone or computer and you’re all set. Forget the waiting room, forget the commute – see how easily telemedicine fits into your life.
Do you accept insurance?
No, we do not bill insurance companies directly for services that we provide. Instead, we use a model called Direct Care. We chose this model because we want to spend more than just a few hurried minutes with you. We believe in the power of the provider-patient relationship, and this requires more than just the quickest of check ups. We intentionally practice medicine in a thorough, unrushed way that allows us to not only develop a relationship with you but truly understand you as a person, what your goals are, and what motivates you. Unfortunately, this thorough, unhurried model of medical practice is not what traditional insurance companies will reimburse. Therefore, we choose to forgo working under the constraints set forth by the insurance companies so that we can serve you, our patients, in the most complete and compassionate way.
What is precision medicine?
Precision medicine is a more personalized and tailored version of healthcare. It incorporates many different facets of an individual patient – such as their genetic risk factors, their lifestyle risk factors, and laboratory data points such as micronutrient status – to depart from the standard one-size-fits-all management plan, instead creating a tailored plan for that unique patient.
Help me understand the difference between functional medicine, preventive medicine and lifestyle medicine.
While these three domains are distinct, we do see significant, organic overlap between them. The Prolongevity Clinic offers services spanning all three of these disciplines.
Medical Discipline | Focus | Key Features |
---|---|---|
Preventive Medicine | Prevents disease, disability, and death through proactive health promotion. | Considers environmental, lifestyle, and genetic factors; promotes preventive measures such as screening and healthy behaviors. |
Lifestyle Medicine | Focuses on behavior and daily habits to prevent, treat, and reverse chronic diseases; strong emphasis on prevention and treatment through natural means. | Emphasizes six pillars: healthy nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, risky substance avoidance, and positive social connections. |
Functional Medicine | Investigates and treats root causes of disease using a systems-oriented approach. | Personalized treatment plans, advanced diagnostics, and targeted interventions; often uses supplements and lab testing. |
As is the case with the more popular medical specialties, such as Pediatrics, Family Medicine, OBGYN, etc, Preventive Medicine isrecognized as a medical speciality by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Preventive Medicine is considered a primary specialty, meaning thatboard certified preventive medicine doctors have completed a medical residency by an ACGME-accredited program and also passed the American Board of Preventive Medicine’s board examination. TheProlongevity Clinic was started by a board certified preventive medicine physician.
Lifestyle Medicine is more of a subspecialty, rather than a primary specialty. If already board certified in a primary specialty, physicians can become certified in Lifestyle Medicine after completing lifestyle medicine training and passing the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine’s board examination. The Prolongevity Clinic’s founding physician is also certified in lifestyle medicine.
Functional Medicine is less regimented in training and certification. There are many educational foundations offering training in functional medicine, and there are also numerous entities offering ‘certification’ in functional medicine. Unlike preventive medicine and lifestyle medicine, there is not one singular overseeing entity for functional medicine. The Prolongevity Clinic’s founding physician has training in functional medicine.
